Many years ago, compound designing was for hotels and recreation places where people paid to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Then, what ordinary people cared about was grass and trees growing in their compound to give a shade for outdoor sitting when the need arose.
Betty Mayanja, a compound designer says compound designing has been embraced as a requirement for every home. People are using plants to create the beauty they want to live in. “Even those that reside in places where there is hardly enough space, strategically placed container plants or desert gardens-plants growing with rocks/stones holding the soil, will be seen as part of the compound design,” says Mayanja..
She also adds that compound designing, can be compared to applying make-up in human beings. It involves demarcating sitting area, plant area, walkways and having proper water channels so that the soil is not washed off. To arrive at this, hard and landscaping is done.
Mayanja explains that landscaping is converting from the natural land appearance to how you desire the topography to look. You can add soil to have the area raised or remove soil to create terraces where cement, bricks and lawn/plants are used to hold the soil. Or soil can be removed to create a sloping appearance good for swimming pool construction.
Alternatively, hardscaping, which is building using cement, for designs as fountains, waterfalls, laying stones or pavements, can be done. All these designs can be enhanced by using plants that give a green and fresh look.
“Care must be taken to select the most attractive plants for the entrance to create an impression.
“Swimming pools have become a major compound complimentary and they shouldn’t be left out,” says Godfrey Lubega the director of Trend Technical Services.
The cool breeze, the beauty of water amidst the green and the health implications of having a pool make pools necessary assets for property.
“A pool adds a lot of value to one’s property,” Lubega says. The minimum one can spend on a small size liner pool of 2 by 2 is between sh17-18 million. This automatically upgrades the value of one’s home,” he says.
While the pool can be situated in any place of the compound, Lubega says it is good to have it in the centre so that some vegetation is planted on either side of it. The contrast between green, blue and the house’s paint will make the home stand out. Pools help to improve one’s health. “Having a pool is a short cut to exercise and thus weight loss or maintenance. You can substitute swimming for jogging” says Lubega.
Yogesh Talhan, the country manager of Nandadeep International, a company that designs compound features, says compound designing is something that has come to stay. People need compounds that will help reduce stress from work while having fun at home. Waterfalls and fountains purify the air and create a mood to relax at home.
“Because people can now have fountains, waterfalls, sculptures and swimming pools in their homes, the stress of finding these facilities elsewhere is dealt away with,” he adds.
The easy-to-install zodiac pools that can be installed above or in the ground, make the home a convenient place to unwind.
