Adrian and I were the perfect match. He was handsome, loving and caring. No thorn would pierce our love no matter what. Anyway that is what I thought at first.
The first time Adrian introduced me to his family was the beginning of trouble in my love life. The questions and the look that I got from his mother were enough to tell that I wasn’t welcome in that family.
I defied my mum’s advice and went to stay with Adrian just to fulfil my desire of love. Sharing a roof with Adrian felt like living in heaven, but as fate would always knock at anyone’s door at anytime, I think mine came much too early.
Lisa, my mother-in-law had a cold heart towards me and she couldn’t even try to hide it.
She could not accept the fact that her son was showering his love on me. She kept throwing tantrums whenever she set eyes on me. I only came to realise a bit late that my man was a “mummy’s boy” and he couldn’t make any decisions without mama’s consent. He would always behave as if heaven was coming down anytime whenever his mum was around.
Then the worse came to the worst: Adrian lost his job and we were in a foreign country. We had to return to his mama’s residence.
We shared almost everything in the house. To make matters worse, her bedroom was just a few steps from ours. Whispering was the order of the day. Whenever I would wear a nice dress, mama would ask why I had to waste money buying such an expensive dress. Jewellry was not meant for me, she would ask her son why he did all that for me. He would have saved the money for a better use.
Adrian would shake like a banana leaf when fired with those questions. What kept me going in that house was when I looked at my one-year-old daughter. Whenever I would take her for an evening stroll, the big mama would lament a lot. One time somebody heard her say that the only thing I did at her home was to eat and grow fat, then move around like a “city council tanker chasing hawkers from Nairobi city centre.” It was hurting and even more painful because whenever I would report this to my dear husband he would only brush me off!
Whenever I offered to serve her food she would ask Adrian to do it instead. It was as if I was out to put love portions in it to make her love and appreciate me like a daughter-in-law.
Adrian would take me out secretly, but in a very odd way. I would have to dress as if I was going to the market, wearing no make up. He would leave the house first then I would follow 30 minutes after, pretending to be taking out our daughter for an evening walk. Mama’s boy would say that it was the best way so as not to upset his mum.
Mama advised her son to sell our property without my knowledge. I only got to know about everything after a month.
There is no word suitable to describe how I felt that time. I went away for a few days, it was all big mama’s idea because she even advised me to leave my daughter behind, little did I know they also wanted to take her away from me.
My parents got furious when I went back without their grand daughter. My in-laws got the surprise of their life as they had not expected me to be back in three days. Adrian’s mum pretended that she wasn’t surprised. I quickly closed the door of my bedroom and sunk in the bed with deep thoughts.
Mummy’s boy arrived and without any words started throwing blows on me, something he had never done in our four years of relationship.
Adrian had turned into a beast I had never seen. His mum was watching happily. I got a chance of sneaking out of the house. I ran to the nearest police station to seek help and refuge.
The police were reluctant when I mentioned big mama’s precious name. They didn’t do much. My presence made the family members behave as if they were already in a mental hospital. I finally decided that Adrian’s home was not the place for me to stay and he was not the right man for me. Going back home with my daughter was not the problem, it was how I was going to be a single mother without any source of income.
Adrian was also regretting his actions, but as long as he was under mama’s roof, there was nothing much he could do. He could send sms to provoke and some to console me, but I never dared to reply any because what he did to me was still fresh in my mind.
To show that she had poisoned her son’s mind completely, Adrian decided to deny paternity of his baby girl. I called him to clarify everything to me because I only heard rumours that he was denying his baby.
It didn’t surprise me anyway because he answered that his mum had advised him to say that. I have finally decided to seek the long arm of the law over the matter.
Adrian has got nothing to do as he has to abide by mummy’s rules or else risks not being called the angel. Ladies out there watch out for mummy’s boys before you fall in the same trap. And boys don’t accept to be a mummy’s boy even though she is your role model!
