Girl rugby rocks Kyadondo
JUDGING from the crowd that watched the visiting Americans from Brown University Women’s rugby team take on the Thunderbirds (Uganda women rugby players) at Kyadondo Rugby Ground on Saturday, it was plainly obvious that women’s rugby has moved up a notch.
JUDGING from the crowd that watched the visiting Americans from Brown University Women’s rugby team take on the Thunderbirds (Uganda women rugby players) at Kyadondo Rugby Ground on Saturday, it was plainly obvious that women’s rugby has moved up a notch.
Like one fan shouted out at the end of the match, annihilation would be the best word to use.
The home side triumphed 31-8, in a match full of silly errors. The ball handling was not all that impressive and both teams tended to run sideways rather than straight.
Despite those errors, the visitors put up a spirited fight right down to the end even though all was lost. And at the end of the match, the visitors did not mope nor did they look downcast. They celebrated to the music from Akem Kwene Cultural Group from Naguru who thrilled them with their Larakalaka dance, a traditional dance from northern Uganda.
The tournament was sponsored by IceMark Africa, AON Uganda Ltd, Nalukolongo Railway Workshop Ltd, Uganda Breweries Ltd, MTN, Hillside High School-Bunamwaya, Rwenzori Beverages and The Surgery.
Other teams who took part in the tournament came from Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi. The team, which flew in last Friday, consisted of thirty-two players, five alumnae, and two coaches for the thirteen-day visit.
