UGANDA has received three ivory detectors worth sh19m from the Lusaka Agreement Task Force (LATF) to curb the illicit trade of ivory, reports Chris Kiwawulo.

Adan Alio, the LATF field officer, said the detectors worth US$3,500 each were to fight illegal trade in animals and plants.

“With the new technology, illegal traders conceal fauna and flora in various forms in and out of Africa,” Alio said.

Receiving the equipment in Kampala recently, state minister for tourism Jovino Akaki thanked LATF for the donation, saying it will boost tourism.

Uganda Wildlife Authority acting executive director Damian Akankwasa said detectors would be deployed countrywide.

LATF aims at conducting cross-border law enforcement and helps to build capacity among national bureaus through training and providing necessary equipment.
