UGANDA Electricity Board (UEB) will cease to exist by the end of this month, the Electricity Regulatory Authority’s (ERA) chief executive officer has said.

Frank Sebbowa said UEB would be removed from the Registry to enable other electricity companies invest in the generation and distribution of power.
During a media symposium in Kampala, Sebbowa said the unbundling of UEB into three companies had greatly reduced costs.

“A restructuring programme for the electricity sector has reduced employees from 3,000 to 1,700. Most of those retired (about 1,300) were paid and are now engaged in other economic activities,” he said.

Sebbowa said the reduced sector costs had enabled expansion of supply and improved connections from 200,000 in 2000 to more than 265,000.

He said the creation of ERA had created the investor confidence required in the sector because the regulator is objective and independent.

Sebbowa said the sector boasts of new and foreign investment, which has led to growth of the sector.

Electricity companies that were formed as a result of unbundling the monopoly of UEB are Uganda Electricity Generation Company, Uganda Electricity Transmission Company and Uganda Electricity Distribution Company. ERA was created to oversee the electricity sector.
