Japan has given a grant of $11,351 (about sh20m) to Kiteredde Vocational Institute in Rakai district to complete the construction of a library and information resource centre.

Japanese ambassador Ryuzo Kikuchi (right) signed the grant contract on Friday with the institute principal, Prof. Hilary Kazoora, at the Japan embassy in Kampala.

The money will be used in purchasing materials for electrical installations, computers, ceiling boards, doors, bookshelves, tables and books.

Kikuchi said there was need to ensure that orphans have access to technical education. “Rakai is one of the districts where the number of HIV/AIDS orphans is high. We recognise the work of vocational institutions in empowering such young, vulnerable people with skills that improve their livelihood,” he said.

Kikuchi said Japan had introduced a scheme dubbed Grant Assistance for Human Security Projects to support initiatives at the grassroot.

He challenged the beneficiaries to use the new equipment for its intended purpose. “We are not only aiming at self-help projects, but also ensuring sustainability of the equipment for the benefit of those who will join the centre long after its construction,” Kikuchi said.

Accompanied by the Kiteredde chairman, Alex Bagarukayo, Kikuchi said, “Being an orphan should not be an excuse of your not progressing higher. Appreciate the initiatives in your communities and utilise them,” he said. Ends
