The over 1,300 students of Mbarara High School have been sent home following a Tuesday night riot, which left the headmaster’s residence and vehicle vandalised.
They also destroyed the canteen and looted the groceries.
The riot was sparked off by the suspension of an S.4 student, Mark Tumusiime. Trouble started at a soccer match on Sunday between Mbarara and rivals Booma High School.
The derby, which took place at Nyamitanga, was characterised by violence and was ended prematurely.
Mbarara High students reportedly misbehaved on the way back to school, reportedly harassing residents in the town.
Tumusiime was suspended on Monday after he was implicated in the violence.
Yesterday, the board of governors led by Ankole diocese bishop Elisha Kyamugambi, convened an afternoon assembly and announced the closure amid heavy deployment of Anti-riot police.
The students were given 20 minutes to pack their property and vacate the school premises.
The headmaster, Nathan Kateeba, said, “The board of governors will provide the terms and conditions for students to report back on April 18 with their parents. They will pay fines for the damages.â€
Kateeba also said a committee would be set up to investigate the riot, establish the value of destroyed property and make recommendations before students report back.
