THE National Water and Sewage Corporation (NWSC) has protested the move by Kampala City Council (KCC) to lease off a wetland in Nakawa.

The New Vision reported that KCC had leased off the wetland at the T-junction of Ntinda Road and Jinja Road to Gids Consult Ltd, contrary to environment regulations.

NWSC managing director Dr. William Muhairwe yesterday said according to the Kampala Urban Master Plan, the wetland plot was reserved for sewage lagoon facilities and KCC should not lease it.

“Sanitation planning is becoming very critical for Kampala. We are running out of suitable space for sewage lagoons,” said Muhairwe.
Meanwhile, KCC chief town planner Charles Kwamanywa has assured the public that it will only approve environmentally friendly development plans for the wetland.
