THE director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Elizabeth Kuteesa, is tipped to move to Nairobi to head the Interpol Eastern Africa Sub-Regional Bureau in Kenya.

Sources yesterday said Uganda had fronted Kuteesa for the post.
However, Kuteesa late last evening was hesitant to discuss the appointment. “No appointment has been made yet,” she said.

“We are still awaiting feed-back from the people who matter,” said Kuteesa when pressed harder to talk about the issue.
She said it was not Uganda to effect the appointment. She said it was premature to talk with certainty about the issue.

Kuteesa, who has headed the CID since 2001, hit the headlines recently when she appeared as a key witness in the high profile Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye rape case.

The Interpol regional bureau came into force on September 11, 1999, following the signing of an agreement between the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) and Kenya on October 14, 1998.

Its formation followed the adoption by the Executive Committee in 1985 of a document on ‘Regionalisation within ICPO-Interpol’ together with a set of recommendations, as a comprehensive vision, that the establishment of Regional Bureaus could improve police co-operation.
