UPDF soldiers yesterday pursued ADF rebels in the jungles of Mt. Rwenzori in Bundibugyo district.

Residents said by 3:00pm, motors and small guns sound could still be heard deep in the mountain.

UPDF 2nd Division spokesman Lt. Tabaro Kiconco said the army engaged the rebels but declined to give details.

“The rebels numbering between 10 and 15 crossed to Ugandan territory on Wednesday but were intercepted and engaged by the soldiers of the 503 Battalion at Rwamabare,” he said. He said Brig. Hudson Mukasa, the division commander, was in Bundibugyo to oversee the operation.

The army has deployed in the Semliki belt to check the rebels from infiltrating into the country.

Kiconco said UPDF did not suffer casualties since the fighting started on Wednesday. Late last year, about 80 ADF rebels were killed in Ituri forest by DR. Congo troops and UN peace-keepers.
