FUFA zone nine has introduced a new competition — Kampala Clubs Champions League (KCCL) — to eventually replace Kampala mini league as an innovation aimed at improving the competition.

Zone 9 secretary Sulaiman Sonda said that the registration-free KCCL will be contested for by 32 clubs in Makindye, Nakawa, Kawempe, Rubaga and Central divisions making the FUFA zone. FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa launched the project on Saturday at Nakawa.

He warned against indiscipline among the players.

Addressing journalists at FUFA House in Mengo on Wednesday Sonda said that the 2006 inaugural competition would run concurrently with the mini league to determine qualifiers for the super division football league.

“This competition (KCCL) will provide a more serious competition. The winner and the runners up will be promoted to the super league next season,” Sonda said of the champions league already sanctioned by FUFA headquarters.

Mulindwa who blessed the tournament with 60 balls was chief guest to draw the teams that were top finalists in the five.

“Teams now have enough competition before joining the super league. They would play home and away format in eight groups to chose the best representatives. We are avoiding the situation where weak teams qualify and are relegated only after one season”, Zone 9 chairman, Eng. Moses Magogo said at the launch.

Mulindwa revealed almost 75 per cent of players smoke opium that instigates indiscipline.

“Players, coaches, referees and other administrators should be sober as we build a foundation for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations team,” Mulindwa urged.
