SCHOOL children in Moyo Girls Unit for the Blind, a section of Moyo Girls primary school, are facing acute food shortage. The headteacher, Constantine Adrari, said the 19 pupils are not given food.

“The children are starving because World Food Programme gives the school only 60 kilogrammes of rice to feed the children for a whole month, a ratio given since 2001 to feed just very few, and forgetting that their number can increase,” he said.

Adrari, who is also blind, blamed the district authorities especially the education office and the politicians for not lobbying for the school to receive more food.

“There is no way WFP could refuse to increase the food for these children because some of them are Sudanese refugees who are suppose to be fed by the UN,” he said.

Adrari also said the ministry of education and sports and districts of Adjumani and Moyo have failed to finance the school to buy scholastic materials.

“The ministry only gives the school sh18,000 for feeding per month and the supplementary funds pledged by the districts are not duly paid,” he said.
The lone teacher who handles all the lessons in the school said their lack of textbooks for upper primary has hindered their progress.

He said the pupils are drawn from Adjumani, Moyo and refugees settlements.

Adrari, appealed for more assistance from WFP and the ministry of education.
