It seems Hope Mukasa and his wife, Sheena, are obsessed with beauty and class. Give them a basement or store, they will turn it into a classic pub or restaurant, just like that!

Case in point. When the original Sabrina’s pub was closed, they opted for a damp, humid basement on Shoal House. They turned the place into a trendy pub called Executive. There is no place like it in the city.

The Mukasa’s have carved out another gem from the basement, which formerly housed a printing press and a store. Sofiz Diner, the restaurant, is named after their eldest daughter, Sophie Mukasa, who is studying in the US.

You approach the restaurant through the main entrance. Once you are past the tall and beefy harmless-looking bouncer, branch to your left. After descending the small red-carpeted stairs you will be ushered into another world of elegant dimly lit, air-conditioned Executive.

Here, patrons and their partners sit on comfortable leather chairs, mumbling sweet nothings and knocking back chilly beers as soft music wafts from the hidden speakers in the ceiling. Ask any waiter to show you the way for Sofiz Diner because it may be hard to find it.

Once you step through the swinging doors, you get into yet another world of elegance. A chum I dragged along to see the place simply went ape. “Wow! This is beautiful... this is too good to be true. I can’t believe there is such a place here.” Couldn’t blame him.

Sofiz Diner is as cool as any classic romantic restaurant in Kampala. Sofiz Diner glows with yellow light from the four chandeliers that are festooned on the ceiling and beamed around the entire restaurant with giant mirrors on the wall.

The warm glow creates a magical air of intimacy while the steady buzz of the waterfall creates a more relaxed romantic atmosphere. The wall-to-wall wood paneling further enhances the ambience.

Three framed paintings of flowers, Bakisimba Dancers, a framed photo of kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi and his queen Sylvia Nagginda an old trumpet and saxophone make up the décor.

The restaurant sits up to 40 people. The staff are friendly, work fast and respect privacy. It is suitable for conferences, meetings and small private parties. The cuisine is oriental, but the main draw is African food.

With the opening of Sofiz Diner, Sabrina is finally living up to its motto: More Than just a Pub. It is now a hangout for bright young things, eager to impress with their voices on the Karaoke every Saturday, a home for football fanatics at Asha Corner, a centre of live music, where bands perform.

Jekaki has now become the house band performing every Friday with different guest artistes.

Sofiz Diner and the Executive are two haunts designed for the top class who wish to treat their taste buds and pamper their partners.
