Christians yesterday held the ‘Way of the Cross’ processions to celebrate Good Friday. The Christians converged at the Constitutional Square for prayers. The procession is in emulation of Jesus Christ who carried his cross to the top of Mt. Gologotha, where he was crucified on Holy Thursday about 2000 years ago.
Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala, Papal Nuncio Pierre Christopher, Church of Uganda Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi and Uganda Joint Christian Council secretary general the Rev. Grace Kaiso attended.
Wamala held a short service at Rubaga Cathedral at about 9:00am in which he blessed the big white cross he was about to carry. Accompanied by a brass-band playing church music, Wamala and his followers walked down to Rubaga Road roundabout as they were cheered by motorists who were giving way to them.
Volunteers helped Wamala labour with the cross through the city, till they reached Pioneer Mall, where he took it over himself to the Square.
The last part of the 3km-walk was marked by entry into the Square via concrete steps. A sweating Cardinal Wamala heaved the cross as he took the steps and was received on the green by Kaiso who relieved him of the burden at 10:20am.
Wamala urged Christians to show their faith in their daily lives, in their relationships at home and at work by caring for others.
“Whether we serve in the government or the private sector, how is our faith reflected? Celebration in the death of Christ should be an inspiration to kill the old man. May the Lord help us to always be a real reflection of him wherever we are,†Wamala said.
Orombi prayed for the country’s leadership to be guided by Christian values. Orombi said, “We came because we have a prayer to make, that the days we have gone through exploitation must stop. (That we see) leaders who will consider the people of God as precious, leaders who are Christians should lead as Christians, leaders who can sacrifice like Jesus did.â€
