Collisions between motorists and boda boda cyclists topped the road accidents list at Tororo Central Police Station between February and March.
Nine cases were reported in March.
The new district traffic chief, Gershom Turyahirwa, said in most accidents, cyclists were on the wrong.
He attributed the problem to the lack of formal training of cyclists.
“Most of them are trained to ride by friends and they join the boda boda business the next day. They don’t know how to read and interpret road signs.” Turyahirwa said last week.
He said most cyclists fled the scene after causing accidents.
“I am warning them because we may soon carry out a crack-down on all unregistered motorcycles,” he said.
There were 21 accidents in February and 20 in March. Two people died in crashes in February and and two in March.
A seven-year-old girl was knocked dead by a speeding Kenyan trailor KAR 916 J/ZC on Malaba-Jinja highway in February, Turyahirwa said.
He cited another accident in which a Tata lorry overturned and killed a man.
