Government departments are stifling the employment chances of Ugandans by buying products that are made locally from abroad, the director of Kitchen and Office Concepts has said, writes Mikaili Sseppuya.
Sadrudin Virani said this during a visit by higher education state minister, Simon Mayende, to the company’s workshop in Industrial Area, Kampala.
Kitchen and Office Concepts is a local maker of furniture products.
“We can do contracts for schools furniture. However, a recent one worth $7m (sh12.8b) was given to a foreign firm. Foreign firms import furniture, limiting chances of employment of Ugandans. I could employ 200 people above the current 45 with such a contract,” Virani said.
Mayende said he was impressed by the high quality of the firm’s furniture, which he initially thought was imported.
He advised heads of educational institutions to buy from such manufacturers.
