Nkumba to get charter

THE National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has recommended to the President that Nkumba University be granted a charter to operate as a fully-fledged university.<br>

THE National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has recommended to the President that Nkumba University be granted a charter to operate as a fully-fledged university.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Senteza Kajubi, said this at the 9th graduation ceremony held at the university on Saturday, where 590 students were awarded degrees, diplomas and certificates in various disciplines.
This means that the university has fulfiled all the requirements for offering quality higher education and its qualifications can now be equated with any public university.
Kajubi informed the university chancellor, Dr. Margaret Kigozi, who presided over the function, that on December 7, 2005, a verification team from NCHE visited the university. “At the end of the inspection, the team said nothing, nor did they smile.
“I am happy to report to you that the assessors have at least smiled. We have been informed that the National Council for Higher Education has recommended that Nkumba University be granted a Charter,†he said amid applause from the gathering.
Kajubi cautioned the graduands that “education without the values of honesty, integrity, compassion, self-respect and love of country produces only clever devils and monsters like those who misappropriate Global Fund moneys for their own personal use and boast about itâ€.
Among the graduands was the Minister of State for the Elderly and Disabled, Florence Nayiga Ssekabira, who graduated with a Bachelor of Community-Based Development, the MP for Moroto Municipality, Sammy Ogwel Loote and other local government leaders. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Dan Muliika, attended.
Margaret Nambasa, a Second Year student of Bachelor of Business Administration, scooped the ‘Pall Moeller Foundation all-round student prize,’ while Princes Ejuchi, who scooped a First Class degree in Business Administration, also won herself a prize.
Others awarded were Steven Tamugiera, the best diploma student, Kennedy Baguma, the best certificate student, and Stephen Ochieng Oduma, the best diploma in Business Administration graduand.
Kajubi, on behalf of Trustees and the university Council, announced the appointment of Associate Professor Dr. Erie Buseere Mugerwa as the deputy vice-chancellor with effect from May 1 and the retirement on the same date of the Rev. Can. David Sentongo, who has served as University Secretary since December 1995.
He recognised Sentongo and his wife Margaret as “the persons of greatest virtue this country has ever producedâ€. Sent-ongo will be replaced by Joy Male, the headmistress of Gayaza High School.
Kigozi said students are faced with rising costs of university education and she encouraged them to continue engaging in dialogue without being confrontational. She asked the Government to support the university.
She advised graduands to make choices that benefit society, not just themselves.
