THE parliamentary finance committee has summoned privatisation minister Prof. Peter kasenene (left) over the sale of the Dairy corporation to a Kenyan tyre manufacturing company, reports Mary Karugaba.

The committee, chaired by Bright Rwamirama, yesterday queried the move to lease the corporation to Sameer Group.

The MPs said the move contravened their recommendation of selling the corporation to a firm that would consolidate milk processing in the country.

The minister is to appear before the committee today.

Sameer Group also deals in communication, construction and manufacturing.

The MPs also queried the process through which the sale was transacted.

James Mwandha wondered whether the divesture was done through competitive bidding as recommended by the committee.

The committee also wants Kasenene to explain the controversies surrounding the privatisation of Kinyara Sugar Works.

In a report on the recent tour to Kinyara by the committee, Rwamirama said they had discovered issues that needed Kasenene’s explanation.

Rwamirama criticised the minister for failure to avail the committee with the company’s financial statement.

“We need to know why the company should be sold yet it is making profits,” he said.
