Wine, Chameleone, Bebe rock Silk

For 2006, it was a momentous occasion –– the long-awaited Silk Street jam on Saturday.

For 2006, it was a momentous occasion –– the long-awaited Silk Street jam on Saturday. It brought down the whole East Africa on a rainy night, which was only quelled by ‘Fire’ from the East African Bashment Crew.
Rain in an African setting is a signal of blessings, and Jah just sent all the blessings on First Street Industrial Area. And the crowds braved the rain rather than look for shelter as the “Lions of Zion” just went down with the rain at 4:00am
But who still wants to listen to Bobi Wine and Chameleone’s bickering? What promised to be a flawless jam was tainted by Chameleone and Bobi Wine fat egos. They used the jam to “diss” each other, with Chameleone informing all and sundry about his new title, ‘His majesty’, to counter Bobi Wine’s Fire Base ‘President’ status. They sampled songs that served as scathing tirades aimed at each other.
It was also a night of stunts. Maurice Kirya did more than just sit on his stool and play the guitar –– he had fireworks, while Bobi wine was ushered on the stage with flames spitting like a barbeque. Chameleone had silly poppers while Bebe cool came up with a new gimmick of throwing money into the crowds. Bebe Cool was, however, responsible for a few cracked ribs, as the crowds fought for the sh20,000 given in notes of sh1,000.
You would forgive the street jam for appearing like a dress rehearsal for the 2006 PAM award finals. Upcoming and established artistes performed like they were licensed to thrill. Isaac Mulindwa, the PAM Awards Chairman, will have a tall order selecting the best upcoming artiste come October.
Other thrilling performances came from Lyrical G, BLUE*3, Julianna Kanyomozi, Sweet Kid and the East African Basment Crew.
In terms of organisation, credit has to go to the sponsors Smirnoff Black Ice, Hot 100 and Club Silk for putting on a show worthy of the sh10,000 fee they charged at the entrance.
Now bring on Street Jam 2007!
