SENIOR counsel Deo Nkunzingoma is the new president of the Uganda Law Society (ULS), the association of Uganda lawyers, including judges.

Nkunzingoma, who is also the chairman of the Anti-Corruption Coalition of Uganda, was elected unopposed at the ULS annual general meeting on Saturday at Hotel Africana in Kampala. He replaces Moses Adriko, who has presided over a two-year term which ended with a surplus of sh35m in the society account.
City lawyer Allan Shonubi was elected vice-president.

Harriet Magala and Bruce Kyerere were also elected unopposed as secretary general and treasurer respectively.

The six committee members are Juliet Nassuna, the registrar of political parties, Jude Atiang, Mildred Nassiwa, Joseph Kaahwa, Assumpta Kemigisha and Medad Lubega.

John Mary Mugisha and Agaba Maguru were re-elected unopposed to represent the society at the Law Council Disciplinary Committee. Other nominees for the disciplinary committee shied away.

Nkunzingoma said his immediate task was to address concerns about delayed judgements.

“There are some specific files. I am going to raise it with the judiciary, call those files and find the reasons why they are delayed,” Nkunzingoma said.

He pledged to maintain the integrity of the society by ensuring that the ethics of lawyers are upheld.
Adriko said his team had managed to broaden access to justice through providing legal aid services to over 7,000 needy Ugandans.

He added that the ULS had increased collaboration with international partners and promoted constitutionalism in the past two years.
