SUDAN champions El Hilal have pulled out of the CECAFA club championship (Kagame Cup) that kicks off in Dar-es-Salaam on May 12.
In their place, the Sudan football body has nominated Al Hilal of Port Sudan to represent the country after the champions opted out owing to international engagements. As a result, Police FC of Uganda will now play Al Hilal instead of El Hilal.
CECAFA secretary Nicholas Musonye revealed on Thursday that Khartoum’s Hilal and El Merreikh declined, forcing Sudan football association to pick Al Hilal who finished third in the league.
The developments mean that Police will not meet the team that eliminated them from the MTN Champions League and putting them in a good position to qualify for the quaterfinals.
The Ugandan champions are in group B. Other teams in the group include Simba SC (Tanzania), SID (Djibouti) and Rwanda’s APR.
Police open their maiden campaign in the regional showcase against APR next Friday at the National stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Defending champions, SC Villa are in group C together with hosts Moro United, Al Tahrir (Eritrea) and Elman of Somalia. Villa play Moro in the first match on May 14.
Musonye said three teams—Hilal, Al Tahrir and Ulinzi(Kenya)—have already submitted their contigents ahead of today’s deadline.
Musonye warned that referees who fail the cooper test will be sent back home.
Meanwhile despite Villa losing seasoned defender Robert Tumusiime, team manager Chris Mubiru feels that the current squad, with the inclusion of newly acquired URA goalkeeper Muhammad Moses, is enough to successfully defend the CECAFA trophy in Tanzania.
