MAKERERE University has instructed lecturers to keep students’ examination scripts for two years before disposing of them.

This will help the university address students’ complaints and appeals, the Academic registrar, Amos Olal-Odur, has said. He said the university would also use the scripts for quality assurance.

“Each dean/director is responsible for ensuring that examination scripts are disposed of in a secure and appropriate manner at the end of the two years,” Olal-Odur said.

He said the resolution was made at the senate’s 124th meeting recently, in which the policy of keeping students’ examination scripts was reviewed.

He said the senate had noted that there was no space in the university stores to keep the scripts.

The meeting also resolved that all academic units return students’ coursework, assignment and test scripts not later than two weeks before the semester final exams, to enable students know their progress and learn from their mistakes, Odur said.

The policy was copied to Makerere University Business school chief Wasswa Balunywa.
