KASSIM “The Dream” Ouma proved that he is still one of the best junior middleweights by recovering from a first round knock down to outwit tough Mexican Marco Antonio Rubio.

Ouma 24(15) 2-1 was thrown to the canvas by two rights shortly after the first gong of the main under card fight.
But in a rare show of resilience, the former IBF champion clawed his way back to register a 117-110, 113-114 and 116-111 victory at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Ouma, who dedicated the fight to an awareness campaign for Northern Uganda’s suffering children, couldn’t have packaged a better claim for yet another title shot.

His eight-month comeback after last year’s title loss to Roman Karmazin has had him stopping highly rated Francisco Mora and Alfredo Cuevas in the eighth and fourth rounds respectively.

Ouma shook off the early knockdown with close combinations in the next three rounds to erase the early deficit.
Rubio 32(29) 3-1 used his killer right shot in the middle rounds to remain in the fight. But the Ugandan always maintained an edge before taking full control of the 12 round fight in the 10th and 11th, as Rubio tired.

Ouma’s right eye was badly swollen after the final gong showing the tough battle that he had been engaged in.
In the main event, Oscar De La Hoya destroyed Ricardo Mayorga in six rounds to win the WBC light middleweight title.
