UGANDAN prize fighter Kassim Ouma recovered from a first round knockdown to beat Mexico’s Marco Antonio Rubio on points at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, on Saturday night.

Judges scored the fight 117-110, 113-114 and 116-111 in favour of the Florida-based boxer, who used the fight as a publicity campaign for northern Uganda’s children.

Ouma had a GuluWalk logo on his robe and trunks in front of a worldwide audience. GuluWalk is a Canadian-led event started as a way to highlight the ordeal of the night commuters of northern Uganda. Up to 40,000 children walk every night from villages to Gulu town and other urban centres to sleep in relative safety on verandas to avoid abduction by rebels.

The win also had Ouma retaining the North American Boxing Organisation junior middleweight title and had a US audience of 56 million people.

Ouma is now eyeing a world title in a comeback that has seen him win all his three fights in eight months.

He beat Verno Phillips in 2004 to become the fourth Ugandan to win a major world boxing title.
