Buganda clans must unite and restore the Royal Mile

SIR — On January 4, 2000 I wrote an article in the New Vision about how the works minister in the Kabaka’s government could repair and reconstruct the original three-lane Royal Mile. Many people supported my idea and some of them even pledged to contribute a grader and money to do the job. Unfortunately it is now five years without any action taken by the minister.

Every year during the coronation commemoration all the Buganda clans congregate along Kabakanjagala and it seems each clan earmarked its own place.

We should request these clans to reconstruct the Royal Mile by giving them technical assistance and the specifications of the materials to be used for the construction of their respective portions.

Alternatively, for the sake of uniformity, we can get one construction company to do the job and the clans contribute towards the cost of the job. All the encroachers on the Royal mile should be evicted.

We have used this system before when the Kabaka’s palace was built by the 20 counties in Buganda at that time. Each county was given a portion and within a very short time the palace perimeter wall was completed with burnt bricks.

The first county to finish its portion was given a shield as a present. Read the Bible (Nehemiah Chapter 3) and you will see how the children of Israel rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem by sharing portions among their clans.

Buganda needs a Nehemiah. Let us restore the glory of the Royal Mile which was there before any whiteman came to Mengo.
