Mengo should initiate development programmes on the vast unutilised land in the Mengo palace and Kasubi tombs, the Kampala mayor-elect has said.

Mengo should initiate development programmes on the vast unutilised land in the Mengo palace and Kasubi tombs, the Kampala mayor-elect has said.
Hajji Nasser Ntege Sebaggala, a business–oriented man, also advised Mengo to set up a bank that will attract subjects to save.
Sebaggala was on Wednesday speaking in a meeting between district and sub-county local leaders from Buganda, convened by Katikkiro Dan Muliika.
Sebaggala observed that the Aga Khan had amassed wealth with very small land, yet Mengo with all the land was almost depending on hand-outs.
He said Mengo could make substantial investments on such land without tampering with the kingdom’s traditions and culture.
He said the oneness exhibited by Baganda under Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi should help them to initiate an institution where cash can be saved and loaned to people at low interest rate.
Sebaggala promised to cooperate with Mengo in efforts to return the kingdom’s assets.
Vincent Ssemakula Ssetuba, the Rakai district chairman, said efforts had been made by a number of districts in Buganda to return kingdom assets.
He, however, appealed to Mengo to allow districts that are still utilising the facilities to rent them out, adding that some of the kingdom structures were dilapidated but had been renovated.
