Tumusiime Mutebile is certainly a Ugandan in his own class!

SIR — Your lead story “Mutebile rejects allowances” published on Monday is a whiff of fresh air in Uganda today. The stampede for political posts by our politicians has nothing to do with representing the electorate at all. It has everything to do with feathering their nests.

That is why in the midst of our stinking poverty, our MPs have no qualms sitting down and deciding what salaries and allowances they should be paid.

Tumusiime Mutebile is a rare character. His reasoning was very noble and unbelievable in our man-eat-man society. if the commission of inquiry into the Global Fund was all about squandering public funds and bringing discipline into the institution then why should the commissioners impoverish it further?

People of Mutebile’s calibre are very few in Uganda. I don’t think he forfeited his allowance because he doesn’t need money but because he has a conscience.

Mutebile is also known to contribute to many charity projects but the forfeiture of his rightful allowance alone makes him stand out head and shoulders above the rest of us.

The man’s principles are as big his physical size. I am sure there are many Ugandans who must be calling him a ‘fool’ because they can’t imagine missing such a chance! Imagine having a President like Mutebile!
