IN a surprise move, outgoing National Political Commissar Dr. Crispus Kiyonga has withdrawn his longtime opposition to the Bakonzo/Bamba cultural institution known as Obusinga bwa rwenzururu.
Kiyonga (right), who is also Bukonzo West MP, on Monday said he accepted the monarchy.
He was speaking at a colourful swearing-in ceremony of the Kasese district chairman, the Rev. Can. Julius Kithaghenda and the NRM-dominated 40-member district council at Rwenzori International Hotel in Kasese town.
Kasese chief Magistrate John Agaba presided over the function.
“I am ready to make a principled compromise on the issue of the cultural institution,” he said as guests looked at one another in disbelief.
The guests included the UPDF 2nd Division commander, Brig. Hudson Mukasa, retired South Rwenzori Diocesan bishop Zebedee masereka, his successor, Bishop Jackson Nzerebende and district Khadi Hakim Juma.
While addressing a rally at Mpondwe Primary School in December 2004, Kiyonga vowed that he would fight the Obusinga and Charles Mumbere, its leader, till his death.
Kiyonga on Monday called on both supporters and opponents of the monarch to unite for development.
