THERE was drama at the swearing-in ceremony of the Moyo district council as the presiding Chief Magistrate and the chairman-elect exchanged hot words over the venue.
Peter Iku Dolo wanted the venue shifted from Moyo Training centre to the Mayor’s gardens where his supporters were gathered. This infuriated Arua Chief Magistrate Joseph Omodo Nyanga, who had been waiting at the venue for over an hour.
Omodo said had it not been a statutory function, he would have just walked away in protest.
“For such occasions, venues are not changed at will. You are not the LC5 chairman until I give you instruments of power. If you have been in a government vehicle and office all this time, it was illegal. I am a chief magistrate, I have the constitutional power to ask for anybody’s arrest, including the LC5 chairman.â€
He told the councillors that a good leader must be “humble, patient, tolerant and accommodativeâ€.
“How can you come at 12:00pm when you are supposed to be sworn in at 10:00am. I hate people who don’t follow time and if you continue with this habit, you will end up without doing anything in the district in your five- year term,†Omodo said.
After taking the oath, Dolo apologised to the Chief Magistrate on behalf of the district council.
