PROFESSIONAL golfer Deo Akope will unleash his newly acquired customised kit worth $3000 (sh5.5m) in the Red Cross Charity golf tournament at the par 72 Kitante course on Saturday.

Akope, who received his high performance Titleist kit from California, USA, at Fedex offices in Kampala yesterday, said he would compete in the charity tournament aimed at raising money to help pregnant women in Internally Displace People (IDP) camps in Northern Uganda.

The tournament is organised by Uganda Red Cross in conjunction with Uganda Golf Club (UGC) women section under the ‘Mama Bag’ project.

“I have got the right equipment now. As professionals we are going to bet money and it will all go to Mama Bag,” Akope said. The charity event will have 50 companies and hopes to raise sh30m.

Fedex delivered the kit from California in just two days at no cost, saving the star golfer $1000 (sh1.8m) in expenses.

Akope hailed Fedex for the free and fast service.

“I can now compete fairly with other professionals elsewhere in Africa,” Akope remarked.
