WHILE some people argue that the living room should be the most elegant area, the bedroom deserves more attention in form of interior design and furnishing because it is where one sleeps and unwinds. It is because of this recognition that accessory stores have stocked up bedroom accessories that spark life and class, writes Roger Mugisha.

Edmund Ssesanga, an interior designer with Kitchen and Office Concepts says, “Most people know that colour is a major asset when it comes to style. Using soft and inviting colours like peach blue, light cream, maroon, velvet and brown merged with a matching curtain will breathe life into any bedroom. In addition, if a bedroom has furniture, having a combination of a duvet and pillows close resemblance would make a delightful blend.”

Kaleel Rahman, the general manager of Biplous Ltd on Kampala road, cautions that beds shouldn’t be placed under windows or doors that are frequently opened to avoid inconveniences.
“The bed is the key piece of furniture in any bedroom and is the focal point. However, most people place their bed against the wall opposite the main door, leaving the headboard as the centre of attention as one enters the room,” he adds.

Rahman explained that the purchase of a large, deluxe bed from them includes a mattress, duvet, bedcover, a pair of bed sheets, four pillows, two comforters, a dressing table, two night stands and a wardrobe. The prices range from sh4m to sh8m.

“And depending on the size of the bed, we could add side lamps, flower vases, bedroom mirrors. The beds are imported from Italy, Belgium and Dubai and come in a variety of designs. Transport and installation of the beds is covered,” he added.

Biplous beds are made in wood, metal, aluminium and steel material (which does not rust or stain). As for furniture, Rahman says they have long and plush sofa seats, which go for sh800,000, cloth hangers and for those who watch television in their bedrooms, they also stock exotic TV cabins and stands, priced between sh400,000 and sh1m.

“At Lily Ann furniture store, we have bedroom suites. They come with a dressing table and two night stands that are fancy and pocket-friendly. These go for between sh900,000 and sh4m. We also have thick curtains, wall paintings, curtain rods, upholstery fabrics and nettings that go for negotiable prices,” says Ann Majugo, the managing director of the furniture store on Bombo road.

In addition, Nikhil Damani, the managing director of Damanico Ltd, says one of the best ways of saving space in the children’s bedroom is by installing bank beds (deckers).

“We have big discounts on all furniture. Some of our bank beds come with an entertainment unit section for a reading table, drawers, computer stand and games. These go for between sh500,000 and sh700,000,” says Damani.

For the adults, beds come with a strong and fashionable headboard, air mattresses, duvets, shoe racks, wardrobes, dressing and bedside tables and pillows. They also have divans which cost between sh1m and sh5m. These have storage sections underneath and sofa beds at sh600,000.
