Norway has reiterated her support for Uganda’s development programmes.

Speaking at the Norwegian Day celebrations at her residence in Kololo on Wednesday, the Norway ambassador, Bjorg S. Leite, said, “I would like to express our support for the priority set by President Museveni and his new government: sustainable peace in the north brought by a comprehensive programme of rehabilitation and national inclusion.

This is an objective we share and will be active partners to.”

Leite also praised the President’s strong support for concrete action to combat corruption. “This is important to foster a healthy and vibrant business and investment climate in Uganda. It will also reassure Norwegian taxpayers that their contribution to the development of Uganda is being well spent,” she noted.

She said investment in a country’s human resources is one of the best ways to achieve growth and stability and that women being an important human resource, which cannot remain under-utilised if society is to reach its potential, both legal and practical barriers must be removed.

“I hope the new multiparty Parliament will enact the Domestic Relations Bill speedily.”

Leite said energy was a major sector in Norway’s cooperation with Uganda and with her abundant energy resources, Norway would work with the government of Uganda to have the important Karuma project started in the near future.

She said Norway would carry out long-term investments in Uganda over the next few years in support of the Government’s objective of reducing Uganda’s dependency on aid.

Former internal affairs minister Ruhakana Rugunda, who represented the President, said Norwegians were close friends of Uganda. He thanked them for their support to Uganda.
