TONY Mawejje’s 95th minute strike sealed Moro United’s fate and made sure that Uganda’s representative Police win the CECAFA Kagame Cup on their debut.
The second half substitute, who replaced Peter Ssenyonjo, scored the winner to add on Dan Mubiru’s 48th minute effort in the final played at the National stadium here.
Mawejje’s strike came as a relief after Julius Mkope had levelled for the Tanzanian champions at the 68th minute and Moses Odhiambo was causing havoc to the Ugandan defence under the command of Simeon Masaba.
The win saw Police coach Sam Timbe win a back-to-back title, after being in charge of 2005 champions SC Villa when they lifted the title in the Tanzanian northern town of Mwanza. Villa were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Ulinzi of Kenya.
The win saw Police win $30,000 (sh54m), courtesy of Rwandan president Paul Kagame, who has sponsored the tournament for the last five years. Moro won $20,000 while APR, who crushed Ulinzi 4-0 in the third place play-off managed $10,000.
Police captain David Yiga received the trophy amidst celebration from a cross section of Ugandans.
APR’s win came after a brace from international Andre Lomani and a goal each by Abdul Sibomana and Laurent Kabanda
