KAMPALA — Parliament’s rules, privileges and discipline committee has rejected the creation of the office of assistant speaker. It also rejected the proposal to use Swahili as the second official language during proceedings, saying no law had been prescribed to that effect. This was after the committee halted debate to consult with interested parties and the speaker of parliament.

Rats detonate
MASAKA — Rats will soon be used to detonate landmines and explosive devices planted in the Great Lakes Region during the colonial era and past wars. An official from the foreign affairs ministry, Nathan Byamugisha, said the UPDF had also trained about 20 officers in Tanzania, in modern demining operations. He was reacting to complaints from resident district commissioner Bamusede Bwambale over landmines planted in the colonial era in Kasese, which still pose a security threat.

Otto petition
KAMPALA — Aruu MP Odonga Otto has challenged as unconstitutional, the election of the youth MPs, in a petition he filed at the Constitutional Court on Friday. Otto contends that the procedure under which youth MPs were elected was wrong and should be declared null and void as it is inconsistent with the Constitution. The FDC youth secretary said the Electoral commission conducted the elections under the expired Movement system.
