Village local council elections take place on August 10, 2006.
The Electoral Commission has gazetted the day for youth and women committee elections.

A programme released by the commission indicates that the parish chairpersons elections and approval of their executive committees will be conducted on August 31, on the same day parish youth and women committees will be elected.

Sub-county youth and women committees will be elected on Friday, September 15, while the district youth and women committees will be elected on September 28.

The national youth and women committees will be elected on October 5.

Commission spokesman Peter Okello Jabweli said the commission was writing to political parties, informing them to mobilise their supporters to participate in the exercise.

He said the administrative units/councils for purposes of elections are county, parish and village in rural areas and parish or ward and village in urban areas.

The council at the county level shall consist of all the members of the sub-county executive committees at the county. The council at the parish shall consist of all the members of the village committees in the parish.

The council at the village level shall consist of all persons of 18 years and above in a given village.

The executive committees will have a chairperson and a vice-chairperson, at the county level, to be elected by the council from among their number.

There shall also be an executive committee (elective) at each parish and village consisting of the chairperson, vice-chairperson, general secretary, secretaries for information, education, mobilisation, security, finance, production and environment protection.

The quorum for a council meeting shall be at least one third.

Candidates will be allocated symbols and the vote will be by secret ballot.
