Busega swamp is in grave danger

SIR — I wish to bring to to the notice of NEMA and the public that the swamp between Busega roundabout and Bulenga trading centre on Mityana Road is in danger.

For the last one month the vegetation in the swamp has been cut down, trenches dug and yams planted in the swamp. The extreme side as one approaches Bulenga has been planted with eucalyptus trees.

Part of the swamp had earlier on been filled with soil to create a car washing bay which, fortunately, did not take off.

The enchroachers are not known (at least to me) but more that two acres have been cut down. When the swamp begins growing again, it is cut down to pave way for yams!

I know NEMA has been focusing a lot of attention on the Nakivubo Channel. I wait to see their action to save the Mityana road swamp. If NEMA cannot see a nearby swamp being destroyed, I wonder what happens to those wetlands in distant places.

On the other hand, I am dismayed at the lack of action by the local leaders and the police at Bulenga. Are they waiting for someone to first report the matter and make a statement?

Can’t they act on their own? Have they no eyes to see the swamp on their own?

I call upon NEMA and all those concerned to act very fast. The enchroachers should also be brought to book. The public should also be vigilant and keep an eye on their own environment.
