IN a bid to dispel criticism that the Electoral commission (EC) doctored the February 2006 elections in which 10,450,788 voters participated nationwide, it is publishing the results from the 19,786 polling stations.

The commission yesterday started with the results from the northern region.

Uganda spent sh64b on the polls that saw President Yoweri Museveni trounce FDC’s Kizza Besigye, DP’s John Ssebaana Kizito, UPC’s Miria Kalule Obote and Abed Bwanika, an independent candidate.

“To promote transparency, the EC saw it fit to publish the results by polling station. We are delivering accountability and transparency to the people. Today (yesterday), we began with the northern region and we are going to publish results of other regions in series this week,” the EC spokesperson, Peter Okello Jabweli, said yesterday.

“We were tired of the opposition accusing us of doctoring the 2006 results. That is why we have decided to serialise them in regions for all to cross-check,” he said.

Jabweli hailed Uganda’s international donors, saying, “We thank the Election Support Unit of the Donor Democracy and Governance Group who include the US, the European Union and others who contributed funding and other technical assistance.”

The election results pullout is titled “The Official Results by Polling stations of the 2006 presidential Elections”.

Yesterday’s issue covered Adjumani, Amolatar, Apac, Arua, Gulu, Kitgum, Koboko, Lira, Moyo, Nebbi and Pader Districts.

The pull-out also covers polling stations in the counties of Kole, Kwania, Maruzi, Oyam North, Oyam South, Ayivu, Madi-Okollo, Maracha, Terego, Vurra and Arua Municipality.
