THE National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has released a list of registered universities and public degree- awarding tertiary institutions in Uganda. NCHE was, however, silent about Namasagali and Luweero universities, which are missing on the list released on Monday.

The NCHE executive director, Prof. K. Kasozi, said on Tuesday that, “Any institution which claims to be a university, university college or other degree-awarding institution but does not appear on this list, is an illegal institution.”

The council also published the four registered public universities of Makerere, Gulu, Kyambogo and Mbarara.

“This is to inform the general public and the students community that the universities and other tertiary institutions Act, 2001 section 118 (1) states that; no person shall establish and operate a university or tertiary institution without the relevant provisional licence, charter or certificate granted under this Act,” Kasozi said in a notice.

Luweero University coordinating director Eng. Rasur Bachu, said, “We are allowed to operate as we process the registration papers.”

Attempts to get a comment from the Namasagali University vice-chancellor, Samuel Kigwana, were futile.
