EX-INTERNATIONALS Paul Ssali, Baker Kasigwa and retired FIFA referee Haruna Mpangire were on Wednesday honoured by the organisers of the John Biribonwa Memorial Cup.
Ssali, Kasigwa and Mpangire were awarded attractive trophies for their contribution to soccer development in the Bunyoro region and Uganda at large.
The ceremony followed the Biribonwa Cup final where Kibaale outwitted Buliisa 4-3 on post-match penalties at Kagadi ground.
The two sides battled to a 1-1 result in normal time of the last match of the competition that drew contestants from Masindi, Hoima, Kibale, Buliisa and Kigumba.
One of the organisers Kenneth Atugonza said the competition is aimed at revitalising grassroot soccer in Bunyoro. Masindi won the first two editions.
Ssali, a 1978 Africa Nations Cup silver medalist, started off his career with the Artillery Regiment in Masindi in the sixties. Kasigwa was part of the Cranes side that visited England in the fifties while Mpangire was, until recently, a FIFA assistant referee. In 2005 the competition’s organisers recognized the contribution of another ex-international Francis Kulabigwo.
John Biribonwa was one of Bunyoro’s outstanding soccer talents in the sixties.
