The world may be glued to the television, watching the World Cup but President Yoweri Museveni does not have a team at the premier soccer event.

Asked which team he supports in the ongoing event, Museveni said he was concentrating on more serious issues.

“Leave those things. I am a footballer and if I want to support, I go in the stadium and play the game. There is no need of me supporting those teams,” said the President, who had just hosted CECAFA champions Police FC at a state dinner at Nakasero on Saturday evening.

Internal affairs minister Ruhakana Rugunda, state sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi, Inspector General of Police Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura and FUFA vice-president Justus Mugisha attended.

Museveni, who advised the players to guard their life from alcohol and aids, said Uganda’s winning the regional trophy showed the renaissance in the country.

“There is renaissance everywhere. An economic renaissance, a political renaissance, religion renaissance and now sports renaissance,” he said.

He advised the Police Force to recruit professional sportsmen for Uganda to shine again.
