THERE are all signs of a tough battle between Commonwealth champion Jackson Asiku (right) and Englishman Jamie Mckeever tonight.
Homeboy Mckeever will be propped by passionate English support as he challenges Asiku at the Everton Park Sport Center, Liverpool.
The last thing this support would want to see, is a repeat of the November fight where Asiku stopped another Briton Marc Callaghan to win the title.
But the champion, who has for a month been training at the Peacock, is brimming with confidence ahead of the 12-round contest.
Asiku and his coach Bosco “Bodi” Waigo warned that Mckeever was in for a big surprise if he thought he was going to use home advantage to cause an ambush.
That Asiku has, with the exception of his June Kampala fight against Zambian Saulus Kaunda, fought all his battles on foreign territory, says a lot about his attitude.
Mckeever, 27, a year younger than his opponent, will get to the ring with an 18(6)5-3 record compared to the champion’s 19(9)3-0.
Asiku’s edge stretches to height. The Sydney 2000 Olympian stands at 5’ 7” with a 67-inch reach. Mckeever is 5’6.5”.
The fight will be the main event on a card also featuring Tony Dodson against Jamie Hearn.
