IT was not to the hills of Kakiri in Wakiso District that we drove on a fine Saturday afternoon for the kwanjula of Vice-President and Mrs Bukenya’s daughter, but to the serene lakeside shores of Garuga off Entebbe Road.

And the Bukenyas could have hardly picked a better location to give away their daughter Georgina Nabukenya Bukenya to Ham Namakajo. With a gentle breeze blowing in off the lake and a location so peaceful you could hear the birds chirp away, everything was set for a grand ceremony. And it was exactly that.

When the groom to be’s 30 plus entourage arrived, albeit a couple of minutes late, there were no problems at the gate as is usually the norm and they were warmly welcomed. The speakers on both sides were something to reckon with. As much as Georgina’s speaker gave Ham’s speaker a ‘headache’, he equally rose to the challenge. It was wit against wit, intrigue against intrigue and cunning against cunning.

The function rolled on well until it was time for the sengas to make an appearance. They threatened to do a slow dance all the way from the house to the function area and if they had been allowed to continue, they would have taken close to an hour to make the fifty meter walk.

Luckily, Georgina’s speaker intervened. And then there was another moment that must surely have had Ham in a tight spot. The senga walked round and round his entourage and took almost forever to recognise him.

Then the bride to be, Georgina, made her appearance. It was not just an appearance that she made, it was coupled with a statement for she was every inch the belle of the day. And when she was in sight of Ham, he looked up at her and gave her a nod. But it was not just a nod, but a nod that indicated she looked out of this world and that he had made the correct choice in her.

And Bukenya too, he beamed a smile of admiration at her. The one other beam that was missing was that of Georgina’s mum, for culture dictates she remain indoors throughout the function.

Guests included ministers, members of parliament and the business community. The couple will formally tie the knot on Saturday at Rubaga Cathedral.
