The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Mutebi II, has said his kingdom is eagerly waiting for the central government to return the Uganda Technical College (UTC) in Masaka to enable them start Mutesa I Royal University.

“We are still hopeful that this institution will soon be returned to its founders,” he said.

The Kabaka was on Sunday addressing his subjects at the UTC campus in Masaka town at its 50th anniversary since it was established by his father, the late Sir Edward Mutesa II, to train the youth in vocational skills.

The function was organised by Nkoba za Mbogo students Association.

The minister of education, Namirembe Bitamazire, did not show up though she had been included on the programme.
Katikkiro Dan Muliika said Buganda had completed preparations to start the university.

He said Bitamazire had expressed worry that lack of funds would delay the relocation of the students to allow Buganda take over its property.

But he said, “This should not bother the government because we are ready to take over the technical college as well and continue giving them (students) the same services.”

Muliika said they want the university to open before the end of this year.

Mutebi thanked government for planning to set up a polytechnic in each sub-county. He said Buganda supports the initiative as a way of promoting vocational training.

He urged parents to help the trainees start their own projects after school, saying no country can develop if it neglects training its people in vocational skills.

The chairman of the university council, Prof. Munaku Kaama, said the university would focus on teaching science and technology.
