UGANDA made a false start as the East Africa Cup youth football championship got underway here yesterday.
Kampala girls team suffered the heaviest humiliation, going down 10-0 to cup holders Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) of Nairobi, Kenya, in the u-16 category. MYSA also holds the boys title.
Masaka proved the most unlucky Ugandan side after throwing away a two-goal lead to lose to EMIMA of Tanzania.
Simon Kazibwe and Yoweri Kisakye put Masaka on the score chart in the first half before Omar Saleh, Ramathan Fazil and Abdalah Mustafa struck for Tanzania to grab victory.
MYSA made a good start with victories in all categories.
The four-day tournament that has drawn 42 teams is sponsored by Norwegian Peoples Aid, Christian Sports Contact (CHRISC) and EMIMA Tanzania.
Uganda has Child Restoration Outreach (CRO) (Mbale), Christian-based Lira sides, Masaka, Kabale, Kisoro, Luwero and Kampala all sponsored by Strome Uganda.
The championship, that involves u-14, u-16 and u-20 boys and girls’ teams from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Norway, is also holding a series of seminars aimed at availing leadership skills, community participation and HIV/AIDS awareness among the youth.
