She said she did not want to be a model, and did not even know the world of fashion existed till she was 17 years old, but Uganda’s representative to this year’s Nokia Face of Africa modelling contest cannot shake off the fashion world, reports Kalungi Kabuye.

Yesterday, news came out of Botswana that Muniirah Namakula was one of the 12 girls chosen to proceed to the next stage of the contest.

Seventeen girls had initially been chosen as semi-finalists from 12 African countries after a search that lasted over three months.

They went into a residential period that was dubbed ‘Boot Camp’ and stayed there for a week. Five girls were eliminated in the first stage.

The 12 girls chosen for the second Boot Camp will now participate in the Nokia Cape Town Fashion Week next week from Tuesday to Saturday. Another two will be eliminated and the remaining 10 will take part in the finals slated for August 13 in Sun City, South Africa.

“This is a good result for Uganda, and we are happy for Muniirah,” officials from Multichoice said. “Now we can only hope she goes all the way and wins the whole thing.”
