STUDENTS of Naluvule Rock Parents Primary School in Wakiso district turned their prefects’ elections into an NRM versus FDC affair during polls in which teachers also voted.

According to the headmistress, Naomi Mpungu, candidates were given two weeks to campaign but during the exercise, those suporting President Yoweri Museveni’s NRM promised to host him at the school, while those supporting FDC promised to host party leader Col. Kizza Besigye.

In the elections conducted by Martin Kalule, a director of studies, Elizabeth Nyangoma, Museveni’s supporter, was elected head prefect, while Suzan Nakaayi, Besigye’s supporter, was elected her deputy.

In other races, Joan Ategeka beat Sydney Semanda to head co-curricular activities with 247 to 215 votes, while Jackline Namugenze beat four candidates to become the sanitary prefect with 200 votes. Victor Kiwuuwa was elected welfare prefect.

Jamirah Babirye was elected house captain for girls and Simon Jemba for boys.

Priscilla is the new office prefect, Jonnah Nkwangu time keeper, deputised by Joyce Nakwanyi.
Mpungu said teachers never voted in last year’s elections, in which students only voted for indisciplined prefects.

“Some candidates never wanted teachers to vote, while others supported the idea but after consulting with the board chairman, Ssempala Mukodo, we allowed them to vote,” said Mpungu, who started the school in 1995 with 30 students.

“We have grown strong, we started with 30 but now we have almost 500 pupils. We thank The New Vison for the PLE pullout. It has helped us a lot, but the paper should also include Luganda because we teach it here,” Mpungu said.
