Museveni promotes 27 UPDF officers

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni last evening promoted 27 army officers, six of them, including colonels Elly Kayanja and Peter Kerim, to the rank of brigadier.
The officers promoted to brigadier were colonels Pecos Kutesa, Geoffrey Taban, Samuel Kawagga and Nathan Katagara.
Kayanja is the deputy coordinator of the internal and external security organisations. Kutesa is the deputy camp commandant of Bombo army headquarters, while Kerim is the operations officer in the office of the Chief of Defence Forces. Katagara was immediately retired.
According to a statement issued by the acting army spokesman, Major Felix Kulayigye, the President also promoted five lieutenant colonels to colonels.
These were Mbugga Kojja, J.B. Mulindwa, Nyakaitano, J. Arocha and Lorot.
Sixteen army officers promoted from major to lieutenant colonels were Muruli, Esapu, Nyarwa, Muhumuza, Duncan Kamugisha, Chris Mwesigwa, who was also immediately retired, Herbert Murombe, Robert Ssekidde and Adolf Sserwadda.
Others who became lieutenant colonels were John. M. Tumwebaze, Augustine Kamanyire, Lutagwa Ssali (who was also retired), G. Rusoke, Michael Kagambirwe and Martin Ndyanabo Dede.
“These promotions are in conformity with the professionalisation programme and the new structure of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces,†Kulayigye explained.
