THE Uganda Police Force on Friday held the first ever farewell party for an outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP), 40 years after the white man handed over office to an African IGP.
Speaker after speaker hailed Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala for transforming the Police soon after the Julia Sebutinde probe into alleged corruption in the force.
“You indeed implemented what the commission recommended and here I am to pick on from where you stopped. I thank you for initiating the use of non-lethal weapons despite the fact that you had come from the army.
“I am grateful that you have left more assets than liabilities. You were determined to improve the Police force and I will not let you down,†said Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, the new IGP.
Katumba received gifts at the function, held at Hotel Africana in Kampala Katumba, who said he was overwhelmed with the party, thanked the Police Force for bearing with his erratic way of doing things.
“I knew more about fighting enemies but learnt a lot from and made sure that suspects were in courts before the elapse of 48 hours. The four years was a learning period, which you should not deny my successor.
"He knows much about law and he is much better than me who knew a lot about artillery. As you accepted me with my shortcomings, accept my successor. We all need to get up to the ladder and together we shall build our institution,†Katumba said.
Katumba thanked kayihura for managing the elections just a few months after he was put into office.
