The US Embassy Public Affairs Officer, Alyson Grunder has described the insurgency in the northern region as a disaster to the children and the population in the area and urged the Government to find ways of ending the 18-year conflict.
Grunder was recently addressing teachers at a two-day Peace workshop at Victoria Montessori Primary School, Entebbe. She planted a peace tree and handed over books to the headmistress, Christine Olanya.
Victoria Montessori School is a member of the American Montessori Society.
The first American Montessori System of Education was introduced in the school in 2001.
Grunder commended the directors of the school for playing vital role in advocating for peace in the north and countrywide.
“I hail the directors and community around Entebbe for playing a big part in peace advocacy in the country. When you are here you could not understand that people in the north are suffering,” she said.
She said the US is committed to improving the education system in Uganda by working in partnership with government and the private sector.
Olanya said the long years of internal wars have affected children yet they are supposed to be leaders.
“A self-reliant population is laid down in infancy. It is during these formative years that potential characteristics of an adult person are decided,” she said.
She said they want to use the children to sow the true seed of peace and love in the country.
