THE Mehta Golf Open eluded the favourites and produced an unlikely winner in Herman Mutawe on a picturesque and tiny par-66 course in Lugazi Sunday.

Mutawe, a new member of Uganda Golf Club (UGC), shot 66 in the opening round and 70 on the final day for an aggregate of 136, beating Shaban Lwanga to the title by one stroke.

Mutawe, who registered his maiden victory in the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play event this year, boasted that he is headed for a long winning streak.

“Now that I am a UGC member I take more time on the course practicing. The course was intimidating but I chipped and putted well. I look forward to winning more tournaments and hopefully the UGU title,” an elated Mutawe commented.

Brian Tolit shared third spot with pre-event favourite George Olayo on 139 while Gerald Ayella was fifth. Stroke-play runaway leader Stephen Birungi suffered his worst defeat this year, finishing sixth, 16 strokes behind the winner.

Deo Akope shot 134 over 36 holes to beat Charles Yokwe to the professionals’ sh0.5m top cash prize.
